The festival of Karthigai Deepam, which is on Nov 29th this year, is one of the oldest festivals in India and finds references in the ancient sangam literature like 'ahananooru', poems of Avaiyar and Thirugnana Sambandar’s Thevaram. It is celebrated in the tamizh month of Karthigai when the star krithikka is on the ascendant and usually occurs on a full moon day.
The holy place of Tiruvannamalai is one of the panchabhootas representing the element of fire. It is called Agnikshetra as it was where the supreme Lord Shiva who manifested as an eternal column of light before Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma.
The festival of Karthigai also holds special significance for Lord Karthikeya. It was on this day that Lord Murugan who first incarnated as six infants from six sparks which emerged from the third eye of Lord Shiva and was brought up by 6 Karthigai Pengal/ Kritikka stars, conjoined into one with the embrace of Goddess Parvati and was thus united with his mother.
The spiritual significance of celebrating Karthigai Deepam festival is symbolized in the functioning of a lamp. The wick in the lamp symbolizes ego. The oil used to light the lamp symbolizes the inborn tendencies in one, which is responsible for the ego to thrive. The flame of the lamp symbolizes spiritual knowledge, which burns the oil as it also burns the ego. Through this one attains the spiritual goal, the realization of the ultimate truth.
'Deepa Mangala Jyothi Namo Nama'
We wish all our patrons a very happy Karthigai Deepam!
