SIS Vaikasi Newsletter
23rd May 2021

Dear Patrons,

We are into the month of Vaikasi which is the 2nd month in the Tamil calendar.

Vaikasi Visakam

Vaikasi Visakam, which falls on May 25th, celebrates the supreme divine incarnation of Lord Muruga in Vishaka star on the Full Moon day of Vaikasi.

Saint Kachchiappah Sivachariyar beautifully portrays the divine descent in the following verse:

aruvamum uruvamAgi, anAdhiyAi palavAi ondRAi
brammamAi nindRa jOdhip pizhambadhOr mEniyAgi
karuNai kUr mugangkaL AaRum, karangkaL pannirendum koNdE
oruthiru Murugan vandhu, Aangku, udhiththanan ulagamuiya
'With form and formlessness, without a beginning and as one and many, stood the column of light, the supreme brahman, who with six merciful faces and twelve arms took the divine incarnation as murugan for the redemption of the world'

Saint Arunagirinathar, in Kandar Anubhuti, similarly extolls the divine manifestation of Lord Murugan,

uruvAi aruvAi uLadhAi iladhAi
maruvAi malarAi maNiyAi oLiyAik
karuvAi uyirAik gadhiyAi vidhiyAik
guruvAi varuvAi aruLvAi guganE!
'You are the Supreme Being, who has form, and who has no form! You are an existent being, and You are also an invisible being! You are the fragrance, and You are also the flower, having the fragrance! You are the precious gem, and You are also its lustre / You are the bell and its sound! You are the embryo, where the soul abides, and You are also the body and soul! You are the abode of mukthi and You are also the destiny, which drives the soul to the abode of mukthi! May You be gracious enough to appear before me as Guru, and bestow me grace!'

Lord Muruga is often called as Guruguhan - Guru is that entity who comes into one's' life to eradicate the darkness of ignorance, and Guhan is the indweller, residing in the cavern of our heart. Thus, Lord Muruga as Guruguhan is the inner light within us, striving to remove our ignorance and negative tendencies.

May we surrender to Him on this auspicious day, seeking His grace to take us higher and close to our true selves.

Important days this month:

Vaikasi Visakam 25th May

Appeal to donate for the pandemic relief in India

India is experiencing a deadly wave of coronavirus deaths and hospitals are unable to meet the demand for treatment. Despite getting through the pandemic for a year, the country’s healthcare system has completely collapsed under the crushing weight of the second wave.

With fatality numbers rising rapidly it is a race against time to help as many people as possible. That’s why we urgently need your support. South Indian Society members have always risen to the occasion with magnanimous support as we saw in the first wave.

We are once again appealing to our community to contribute for this cause. As a registered charity all contributions to SIS we can avail of gift tax aid which will further boost our contribution.

All contributions will go to the PM Cares fund

The details of the bank transfer are as below:

  • Name of Account: South Indian Society; Sort Code: 202937, Barclays Bank; Account No 50284645
