We are into the month of Avani and everyone would be gearing up for Pillayar Chaturthi which falls on Saturday Aug 22nd 2020.
Ganesha, the Lord of beginings is hailed as "Vighnaharta" (the one who removes obstacles) and hence is invoked before initiating any new task / auspicious ceremony. Devotees believe that if Vinayakar is worshipped, he grants sucess, prosperity, and protection against adversity.
Kanchi MahaPeriyava, in one of his discourses narrated the story of Avaiyaar to describe that Pillaiyar the Supreme first is foremost in lifting up the devotees to the greatest level. Avaiyaar was an ardent devotee of Ganapathi. Once Sundaramoorthy Swamigal and Cheraman Perumal started for Kailasam. They thought of taking along Avaiyaar as well. At that time Avaiyaar was offering her worship to Vigneshwara. So Sundarmoorthy and Cheraman asked her to speed up and finish the pooja fast. She said, “I cannot do the Puja in a hurry. You can go ahead. Vinayaka puja is my Kailasam.” They left. Avaiyaar did the puja in the proper pace. Once the puja got over, Pillayar appeared before her and lifted her with his trunk and in a single sweep placed her straight in Kailasa. Sundaramoorthy, and Cheraman reached there later where Cheraman composed and sang ‘Thiru Kailaya Ula” song.
MahaPeriyava quotes these lines from Arunagirinathar's Thiruppugazh (Nada Vindu):
Aadaram payil aaroorar thozhamai, Serdhal kodavarode munaalinil
Aadal vembari meederi maa Kayilaiyilegi, Aadiandha ulaa aasu paadiya
wherein this incident is described.
We wish our patrons a very happy Vinayagar Chaturthi.
